Because spraying the wasps flying around does nothing to the colony, and getting close enough to treat the nest is how people get stung repeatedly. European wasps defend hard when disturbed and, unlike a bee, each wasp can sting again and again. Ground nests are the worst for it, because you usually find them with a mower.
Should I block up the wasp nest entrance?
No. Sealing a nest into a wall cavity does not kill the colony, it just makes them chew a new way out, and that new way out is often into the room on the other side of the wall. Leave the entrance exactly as it is so we can treat into it.
